FAQ about your Computer

My Computer is running very slow, what are some things I can do to speed it up?

There are several things you can do, lets start with the simplist:  Reboot your computer.  You would be surprised how many time a reboot will fix a bunch of problems.  Try this first.  You could need a memory upgrade.  You can't have too much memory.  Another reason could be hardware failure.  When a hard drive is about to go bad (generally speaking, a hard drive should be replaced every 3 years) it will cause errors and slow down the computer to a crawl.  You could also have a virus and/or spyware on the computer.  You can also look at the ammount of memory (RAM) you have in your computer.  If you have less that 1 GB, then you need more.  I never build any computer with less than 2 GB

Which is better, DSL, Cable or Fiber for broadband internet service?

Generally, they all work great, as long as you can get the service where you are.  Most bang for the buck seems to siding with cable or fiber right now, with download speeds vs. cost.  Whether you live in a Comcast or Verizon area, you can check either of their websites to see if it is available in your area.  You can also go to Qwest's website to check availability as well.  In my opinion, I have cable and the way I have it configured, it works for me.

When should I be looking to upgrade my computer?

I usually tell my clients that the times to upgrade your hardware or just get a new computer are:  Cost of fixing the computer is more than the computer is worth, the computer is 3 years old or older, you are upgrading enough software on your computer that it makes since to get new hardware as well.   An example of this one would be upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 and adding an Office suite as well.

What is the best Antivirus

The best antivirus is you.  Antivirus programs generally work the same.  The downside of having an antivirus program is that they bog down your computer.  They are also one of those programs that you never think about until you need it.  My advise is to ask your email provider (who may also be your ISP) if they have a virus filter on their servers.  That way, your mail is filtered before it gets to you.  Don't open any email from a questionable source and don't open any attachment that you even think is suspicious.  Also, DON'T SURF PORN !!!!  (on the other hand, DO, but keep my number handy, it pays my bills !)

Should I upgrade to Windows 7?

Yes!  It is way better than XP and Vista
